You’ve spent days, maybe weeks, planning the perfect Thanksgiving menu. On the day after Thanksgiving when the food coma wears off, you may find yourself with a refrigerator full of leftovers and a house full of ravenous family members. If that’s the case, Founding Farmers has several unique and tasty home recipes to satisfy your famished loved ones using many Thanksgiving favorites.

Farmers Thanksgiving Leftover Recipes:

Sweet Potato Pancakes with Cranberry Maple Syrup

Ham & Turkey Stuffing Griddle Cakes with Cranberry Aioli Sauce

Turkey Pot Pie Ravioli

Turkey Pot Stew

On Thursday morning, turn to CNN between turkey basting sessions and watch an interview with Chef Al as he prepares some of these dishes.

If you plan to eat Thanksgiving at Grandma’s farmhouse and find yourself yearning for a leftover-like-meal on Friday, Founding Farmers will be serving brunch Friday through Sunday of the holiday weekend, including the sweet potato pancakes with cranberry maple syrup. Holidays should always be this delicious!

DC Venue Spotlight: Farmers & Fishers at the Georgetown Waterfront

Tuesday, May 11, 2010 by Leigh Murdock

I recently assisted with hosting a “dine around” and was fortunate to be a part of the group dining at Farmers & Fishers at the Georgetown Waterfront in Washington, DC. Newly opened in October 2009, its location alone is unparalleled. Farmers & Fishers sits just steps from the Potomac River in a vibrant cluster of bars and restaurants. The menu spans the outdoor wall and entices passerby’s with it’s organic and homegrown mix of tasty ingredients and unique cocktails.

The food here is its best asset. From goat cheese ravioli to fish tacos to beet salad and pizza, there is something on the abundant menu for everyone. The restaurant is owned by the North Dakota Farmers Union and Founding Farmers, and is dedicated to the use and promotion of sustainable agriculture. Furthermore, the high ceilings, spacious square footage and variety of seating options make for an ideal setting on the waterfront. The food is matched in excellence by the three special event rooms.

We’re grateful for the mention, CVent….read on to see what else they have to say about our offerings…and then book your next event at Farmers & Fishers! The Gallery Area of the restaurant, the Main restaurant and the entire restaurant are also available for reserve, fitting up to 300 people, but the three private dining rooms are what make this restaurant truly special:

The Wine Room
This room is an incredible space for a small meeting, family dinner, or a bridal shower. Although it’s not quite as conducive to a very private and uninterrupted discussion as is the Harvest Room (there is a large window in the room looking out over the waterfront terrace and fountain), it’s circular table and walls lined with wine bottles offers a unique experience. The room holds up to 14 people for a seated lunch or dinner, and also includes a flat screen monitor for presentations or meetings.

The Harvest Room
Tucked away in the back of the restaurant, the ambiance of this room is lovely and very private. Cozy, warm and intimate, this DC banquet space is perfect for a group of less than 30 people. It’s also available for standing receptions, accommodating around 45 people. The fireplace adds a welcoming touch.

The Sunflower Room and Fireplace Lounge
This elegant and private space fits a larger crowd: 70 seated and 120 reception-style. Complete with two flat-screen televisions, a fireplace, and high-speed Internet, the space can accommodate several different types of group arrangements for meetings, receptions, presentations, parties and more.

“The section, which appears Wednesdays, is edited by Joe Yonan. The award, for work published last year, was announced Sunday night at a dinner in New York.

The section’s deputy editor is Bonnie Benwick, Jane Black is its staff writer, and Leigh Lambert is the editorial assistant.”

Referred to as the “Oscars of the Food World” by Time Magazine, The James Beard Foundation Awards honor chefs; food and beverage professionals; print, online & broadcast journalists that focus on food; and restaurant designers for their talents and achievements in the food world. During this tough time for journalism—especially in print media—this award is an exceptional achievement that honors their commitment to putting out an exceptional food section each week.

It is certainly due in part to the Post‘s continued delicious coverage that Washington is now considered one of the country’s top culinary scenes and for that we say cheers and thank you to the editors and journalists for their hard work!

Spring in DC means Cherry Blossoms! Of course we’ve got something delicious to share for all the cherry blossom fans out there, and Greg’s List DC co-founder Anita Hattiangadi has a lot more about the Cherry Blossom Festival to share with everyone!

Written by Anita, GregsListDC.com March 27, 2010

Spring is finally in the air—which means that cherry blossoms are blooming in the DC area and cherry-themed items are popping up in DC-area restaurants. More than 70 area restaurants will celebrate the National Cherry Blossom Festival (which runs today through April 11) by featuring “cherry pick” entrees, desserts and cocktails. Here’s your guide to some of our fruity favorites.

Wash down (Cherry Blossom menu items from restaurants all over the city) with a sour blossom mousse cocktail from master mixologist Jon Arroyo at Farmers & Fishers or sister restaurant, Founding Farmers. This deep crimson concoction topped with airy white chocolate foam* is potent enough to be enjoyed as a cocktail yet tasty enough to qualify as dessert!

*Inspired to make this at home? Here’s the recipe!
The Farmers’ Sour Blossom Mousse, by Jon Arroyo

1 oz cherry puree – fresh, pitted cherries work best!
½ oz fresh lemon juice
1 ¾ oz FF rye whiskey (or your favorite Rye)
1 oz simple syrup
2-3 dashes Mole bitters
½ oz ruby port (your favorite)

Mix all the ingredients and shake. Strain the mixture into a champagne coupe and garnish with cinnamon mousse foam (a foam of fresh ground cinnamon with white chocolate) and freshly grated white chocolate.

For a full list of the festival’s great entertainment and cultural events, including the fireworks display on April 3, and the National Cherry Blossom Festival parade and Japanese street festival on April 10, visit the official Cherry Blossom Festival site. Cheers to Cherries!

As part of UNICEF’s work on bringing clean water to children around the world, they have launched the Tap Project, a fundraiser where restaurants urge guests to donate $1 for water, with all donations going straight to the project. Founding Farmers and Farmers & Fishers are on board to help increase awareness of the world water needs and your assistance is needed!

Since both Farmers locations serve tap water that’s been superfiltered and mineralized through Natura water stations, (and NO bottled water), this was a natural for us. A story in Food Safety News looks into the work UNICEF is doing—please come help us support them this week with your donation. We’re asking guests to donate $1 per jug of water that is brought to the table and additional donations may be made at the restaurant.

Donations will be accepted at both restaurants through Saturday, March 27, 2010. Thank you in advance for your support!

From the Food Safety News article “Restaurants Join in Clean Water Project” by Helena Bottemiller:

Next week, waitstaff at restaurants across the country will invite patrons to donate a dollar for their tap water to help UNICEF provide clean water to children across the globe.

Waterborne illness remains the second leading cause of death for children under the age of five–4,100 children die every day from water-related illnesses. Almost 900 million people lack access to clean water and UNICEF’s Tap Project aims to help cut that number in half by 2015.

During World Water Week 2010 (March 21-27), participating restaurants across the country–including top restaurants in Washington, DC and New York–will ask their customers to donate a dollar or more for their tap water to raise funds and awareness for the project.
